close up of rim showing banding pattern on rock wall This picture shows the banding pattern ont he rocks that are found below the top bedrock that was first observed at the original landing site. The bands here are quite straight suggesting deposition at the bottom of a lake.

Looking into the craterHere is one of the first pictures looking down into the crater. Interesting banding pattern ont he rock walls on the opposite side. Presumably the texture at the bottom of the crater is created by fine sand dunes from swirling winds caught in the crater.

Another rock closeup This is another close up of the strangely eroded rock with embedded "blueberries"
Close-up of crater rock This is a a l close up of the odd texture of the eroded crater rock with embedded "blueberries". These blueberries are actually only a few millimeters wide and are thought to be concretiosn that developed inside ther rocks as precipitated material. Think of them like pearls growing inside of a clam.
pockmarked landscape in front on large crater. The heat shield is also visible off in the distance. Presumably these pock marks are from very small meteors that have struck the plains and leaving a small crater than has then been eroded over time by scouring sand. com eare almost completely filled in now. What is interesting about the large crater is the lack of rock debris lying around which suggest that the sedimentary rock that got thrown our was easily erosed on the plains leaving only the little "blueberries" that litter the ground.
